Renoir Exhibition Catalog Details
From Library Journal This is the catalog of the most comprehensive international exhibition since 1973 of the works of Renoir. The exhibition is a cooperative venture of the Arts Council, Reunion des Musees Nationaux, and Boston Museum of Fine Arts; the text is by Anne Distel (curator, Musee d'Orsay) and John House (Courtauld Institute of Art) with an essay by Sir Lawrence Gowing (University College, London). And an erudite volume it is, expanding on three themes: Renoir's world, his collectors, and his sentiment and sense. The restrospective show is somewhat abbreviated in the United States; however, all 126 paintings are shown here in quality full-color plates. A new perspective is gained towards Renoir's sunlight-filled canvases of smiling faces, bright landscapes, and appealing nudes. There is a useful chronology and a select bibliography.
